Though the car’s production run was sadly short-lived, there’s hardly a vehicle more unique or iconic than AMC’s DeLorean. The electronics, however, produced in the early 1980s, could use some updating. Rather than installing an entire time machine, Imgurian “The King of Dub” decided to replace the dashboard controls with an iPad Mini. Conveniently, the Mini fits exactly into the space left when the central vents and stereo deck are removed.
For media control and playback, an audio extension cable splits out the microphone and speaker signals, enabling hands-free calling and voice commands. The custom software displays data for the outside temperature as well as a GPS-controlled speedometer and heading reading. It also allows for voice control and searches, such as helping you find the nearest gas station.
Accessory control is accomplished with a bank of relays which the iPad controls over Bluetooth via a Bluetooth Bee module, designed to plug into a normal Xbee socket. This allows for control of the car doors, as well as the locks, trunk, and the tiny windows. GPS readings are used to disable some functionality if the car is in motion, preventing unsafe operation. Additionally, the new setup integrates a rear view camera, and can even open the garage door using a stock opener wired into the bank of relays. It’s an amazing build, and well worth checking out further in the above link.[h/t: Reddit]
